Competition for graduate jobs has never been more fierce. With tuition fees at a whopping £9,250 a year at most universities and living costs representing financial sacrifices for many, students reasonably demand degree courses that offer them the best value for money in today's tough jobs market.

To help you decide, here is a list of the top 10 degree subjects for getting a job, according to the Complete University Guide (CUG). The rankings use the latest data from HESA, for the period 2015-16.

10. Building

With a graduate employability rate of 81 per cent, there's no doubt that a degree in building is a solid investment in a future career.  And it's not just for those who like to get their hands dirty. A degree in building can open the door to plenty of lucrative career paths including quantity surveying, property development or building economics.

9. Land and property management

An impressive 85 per cent of graduates in this discipline - which involves looking into how the built environment and countryside impact on the quality of human life - found employment within six months of graduation. Graduates go on to become rural practice surveyors, residential surveyors and estate agents, among other professions.

8. Occupational therapy

Not only is a degree in occupational therapy - which involves offering practical support to help children and adults to independently carry out everyday tasks - rewarding, its graduates also has excellent employment prospects. An incredible 88 per cent of students found employment within six months of graduation.

7. Optometry, Ophthalmology and Orthoptics

A course in one of these subjects - which involve the general scientific study of the eye and associated issues and diseases - will almost guarantee you a job. Just under 90 per cent of graduates found employment within six months of graduation.

6.  Medical technology

Graduates in medical technology - which involves the study of the use and development of medical equipment in identifying and treating human disorders - were just as successful in finding employment as those in optometry, ophthalmology and orthoptics at 89 per cent.

5. Medicine

No surprises here. A massive 93 per cent of medicine graduates landed themselves a job within six months of graduation. While the course requires more training after you've completed your lengthy degree, the work will be paid.

4. Veterinary medicine

Want to make a career out of your love for animals? Graduates in veterinary medicine were even more successful when it came to finding a job after graduation, with 94 per cent securing employment.

3. Physiotherapy

A degree in physiotherapy - which involves the treatment of illnesses, injuries and disease via physical methods - can lead to a rewarding career within the NHS or private sector. And newly-qualified graduates were not short of job offers, it would seem, with 94 per cent finding employment within six months.

2. Nursing

Unsurprisingly, given the severe shortage of nurses, a degree in nursing has one of the highest employability rates at 94 per cent. Graduates can go on to become adult nurses, mental health nurses and midwives, among other options.

1. Dentistry

A predictable number one, but the margin is still remarkable for this vocational course. A whopping 95 per cent of dentistry graduates went on to find employment within six months, making them the most employable in the UK.
