2023 Aintree hero Corach Rambler is the warm favourite to win the Randox Grand National once again with 51 horses now on course after the five-day declaration stage.

All the leading fancies stood their ground for this Saturday's £1 million Randox Grand National at Aintree Racecourse with seven horses taken out of the race – Classic Getaway, Bronn, Fury Road, Empire Steel, Fantastic Lady, Angels Dawn and Full Back. Lucinda Russell's Corach Rambler – a best-priced 11-2 favourite with Betfred – is on course to bid for back-to-back victories in the Aintree showpiece this weekend. Gordon Elliott's Conflated continues to top the weights on 11st12lb, but the Gigginstown House Stud-owned 10-year-old is also entered in the Aintree Bowl and the Melling Chase on the Thursday and Friday of the Grand National Festival respectively.

The Russell-trained Corach Rambler, who currently has to carry 11st5lb in his bid to become the 10th dual winner of the race, heads back to Aintree this weekend as the favourite, as he was when he won last season. He warmed up for the defence of his National crown with a superb effort when third behind dual winner Galopin Des Champs in the Cheltenham Gold Cup at last month's Cheltenham Festival. Under Derek Fox, who also partnered Russell's One For Arthur in his Grand National victory six years earlier, Corach Rambler went on to land the world's greatest steeplechase last April, scoring by two-and-a-quarter-lengths from Irish raider Vanillier. Russell's two successes broke up the recent Irish dominance with five of the other winners from the past seven renewals hailing from the Emerald Isle.

Speaking to Irish bookmakers BoyleSports jockey Fox is hopeful Corach Rambler can win again. He said: "It was to be expected to carry more weight this year after the Gold Cup run. I think he is still capable off of this year’s rating, we will just have to give it a go. It will be harder with that weight but he couldn’t be coming into the race any better off the back of a really good run at Cheltenham, he is every bit as good as he was last year. All you can do is prepare him well and go into the race with everything as right as possible. His run in the Gold Cup gives me real confidence that he is fit and well and feels on top form. With luck in running, I think he can win the National again."

He added: "My first racing memory is watching the Grand National as a young boy in Ireland. I have always watched it from a very young age, it is very important, an iconic race in the world. The style of the green fences are unique and it is a great spectacle. The thrill of them watching Becher’s for the first time was a great memory, not who won the race. It really gets your adrenaline up just to watch it. It is unbelievable to say I am a two time winner of the Grand National. When you set out to be a jockey, you want to be successful. To win the most famous race of them all is very special to be able to say."

Three-time Grand National-winning trainer Elliott still has 13 entries in the Aintree marathon – including nine of the top 34 on the list – although his highest horse in the betting is Delta Work, who was third in the race two years ago, a best-priced 33-1 with bet365. His great Irish rival, Willie Mullins, also has nine left in with eight currently in the top 34 and guaranteed to line up. Mullins' two main hopes in the betting are the JP McManus-owned duo I Am Maximus, winner of the Irish Grand National last year and Bobbyjo Chase this season, and Meetingofthewaters, who finished third in the Ultima Handicap at Cheltenham earlier this month. I Am Maximus is a best-priced 8-1 second favourite with bet365 and Meetingofthewaters is 11-1 with Skybet. Another from the Mullins' stable – recent Midlands Grand National runner-up Mr Incredible – is 14-1 with bet365. Of the top 34 Elliott's Galvin and Mullins' Stattler, who run in Ronnie Bartlett's colours, are doubts to line-up with their owner stating that if the ground at Aintree – which is currently soft, heavy in places – is too testing they won't be running.

Last year's runner-up Vanillier, from the Gavin Cromwell stable, is a best-priced 10-1 with Betfred to go one better than last season. So far this season Vanillier has twice finished fifth – in fields of six and seven – and then 15th of 25 earlier this month in a Grade Three at Leopardstown. The nine-year-old was also second to fellow Grand National hopeful I Am Maximus in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse last month. Cromwell also has recent Cheltenham Festival winner Limerick Lace among the top 34 entries. The well-fancied Panda Boy, from the Brassill stable who won the National with Numbersixvalverde in 2006, is now guaranteed a run at 32nd on the list and is a best-priced 14-1 with bet365.

They are among a strong contingent from Ireland which also includes the second top weight, Emmet Mullins' Noble Yeats – who won the National two years ago and was fourth last year. He is a best-priced 20-1 with most bookmakers. Having had an initial record 61 entries, Ireland continues to dominate the race and of the current top 34 – the new maximum number of runners who can line up on Grand National day this year – in the handicap, there are 27 from the Emerald Isle.

There are currently just seven of those top 34 trained in the UK with Corach Rambler the main one. Joe Tizzard's Eldorado Allen; two horses who won over the Grand National fences at the 2022 meeting in Peter Bowen's Topham Chase hero Mac Tottie and Tom Ellis' Foxhunters' Chase scorer Latenightpass; Venetia Williams' Becher Chase winner Chambard; Gary Moore's Welsh Grand National victor Nassalam and Galia Des Liteaux, from the Dan Skelton stable are the other British entries.

Williams' Chambard is currently down as the 34th horse on the list. But with Chambard; the 33rd horse Eklat De Rire, from the Henry De Bromhead stable; and the 35th horse Kitty's Light – Christian Williams' Scottish Grand National and bet365 Gold Cup winner – all sharing the same handicap mark a balloting system may be needed to decide which two horses get in if they are in they remain in same order at the next and final declaration stage is on the morning of the meeting's opening day – this Thursday (April 11). Kitty's Light is a best-priced 14-1 with most bookmakers. Meanwhile Cromwell's Malina Girl is now the 36th horse on the list with Brassil's Desertmore House 37th and Kinondo Kwetu 38th.
