Grand National singing session breaks out at Liverpool Central Station

Grand National racegoers broke out into song as they continued the party at Liverpool Central station.

People who had enjoyed their day at Aintree decided they hadn't quite had enough of the festivities as they arrived in Liverpool city centre. Footage captured by the ECHO shows several people joining in with a group of buskers at the station, singing a cover of Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus.

The impromptu boogie came at the end of a day of racing on the last day of the Grand National Festival 2024. The clips show a group of men bursting into song and a few people also busting out some dance moves.

It’s not the first time the band, The Rag Tag Misfits has had the Aintree crowd up on their feet, videos captured by the ECHO through the years show hordes of racegoers dancing to their tunes.

The Grand National may have ended, but the party has carried on. Thousands of people descended on Aintree Racecourse for the final day of the festival, and to bear witness to the world-famous steeplechase. While the race has previously got underway at a later time, this year's began at 4pm.

Another change saw the number of horses running reduced from 40 to 34. The Jockey Club, which Aintree is a part of, said the changes were brought in for safety reasons.

The start time move was due to "concerns about the long build-up to the race throughout the day and heightened tension as a result", while the first fence was also moved 60 yards closer to the start to slow the early stages of the race.

And when it came to the race just 32 horses set off, after Chambard and Run Wild Fred were announced as non-runners. As well as the crowds at Aintree, many people from Liverpool and beyond place bets for the Grand National.

Some bookmakers pay out for up to seven places on each-way bets, and today it was I Am Maximus who came in first place, ridden by Paul Townend. Trained by W P Mullins, the horse won last year's Irish National, he was briefly favourite following an easy win in the Bobbyjo Chase.
