A grandma has reportedly shot her grandson for putting a cup of tea on her furniture.

The bizarre incident occurred last week when Minnesota woman Helen Washington, 75, repeatedly told her grandson to keep his teacup off her wooden table, local media reports.

Her grandson ignored her requests, so Ms Washington left the room to dump his tea and retrieve a shot gun, according to local outlet the Star Tribune.

When she returned to the room, her grandson had poured a new cup of tea and placed it on the table against her wishes.

Ms Washington then pulled out her gun and shot her grandson in the right thigh, according to local news outlet KSTP.

Officers found a .38 special revolver with five rounds of ammunition at the scene and Ms Washington is scheduled to appear in court on December 18, The Star Tribune reported.

The name and age of her grandson were not released.
