Parents of a newborn baby who suffered horrific burns just after he was born have cruelly abandoned him because of his injuries.

The tot, named Matvey, was scarred for life after the medical lamp in his incubator malfunctioned and caught fire when he was just three days old.

His parents left him with medical staff after being told what had happened and it has been up to the hospital in Tula, Russia, to take care of the baby.

Now seven-months old, Matvey - who was severely burnt over 70 per cent of his body - is still clinging to life.

A hospital spokesman said: “The boy was inside a phototherapy machine when the machine’s lamp caught in fire.

“Seventy per cent of the boy’s body was burned.

“His internal organs were also damaged.

“Matvey was taken to a Moscow hospital for specialist treatment.”

Miraculously, the boy survived after numerous emergency services but he remains in a serious condition in intensive care.

The spokesman added: “[He] seems to have an enormous desire to live despite his horrific injuries.”

Doctors now hope that Matvey will start to gain weight as he is now over the most critical phase of his recovery.

However, he still needs funds to pay for plastic surgery and a long period of rehabilitation - and volunteers are hoping that the Russian state will contribute towards it.

One of the fundraisers said: "The baby doesn’t give up. He wants to live despite everything.

“Not many adults would be able to endure the suffering he has.

“He suffers and hopes for our help.

“Please do not stay indifferent. We wish for the baby to have treatment, because he deserves it.”
