Greece to transfer 40 Soviet BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine

Greece will receive modern “Marder” infantry fighting vehicles from Germany as a replacement.

“Following the decision of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Greek Minister of National Defence, Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos and the German Defence Minister, Christine Lambrecht, agreed, in support of Ukraine’s brave defence against Russia’s ongoing aggression, that Greece delivers to Ukraine 40 BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles,” the Defense Ministry said.

In early June, German newspaper Bild, citing a high-ranking representative of the Greek Ministry of Defense, reported that Ukraine would be able to receive Greek BMP-1s according to the scheme proposed by Berlin in a matter of months.

Earlier, a spokesperson with the Greek government confirmed that Greece would transfer about 100 BMP-1 units to Ukraine when it receives the German Marder infantry fighting vehicles promised by Berlin.
