Detailed plans for up to 112 new flats and two retail units on the site of a former Peterborough nightclub have been given the green light. The decision was confirmed by the city council earlier this week.

The application was put forward by Westwood Commercial Property in December 2023, having received outline approval nine months earlier. This phase sought permission for the appearance, layout, access and landscaping for the site.

The development will be split between two blocks and consist of 34 one-bed flats, 78 two-bed flats, as well as around 148 cycle parking spaces. Initially, there were plans for student accommodation and an underground car park, but these were both scrapped.

The site was previously occupied by The Solstice in Northminster, which was a popular hotspot among locals and one of the city's premier nightlife venues. However, it shut its doors in October 2020 and was demolished two years later.

A design and access statement for the application said: "The design of the development will take the form of a 'U' shape providing a private courtyard accessible to all residents in the centre. The eastern accommodation block reaching three storeys in height developed with its own character and design language.

"The western apartments will form a ten storey feature focal point, providing a feature focal point to the corner of Northminster and Brook Street, with retail units on the ground floor to promote an active public realm around the development.

"Overall, this development offers a large public benefit to the city of Peterborough and its residents; providing high quality accommodation and new retail units in the city centre."

The application can be viewed in full on the Peterborough City Council planning portal. This can be done using the reference 23/01722/REM or by clicking here.
