Grenfell inquiry: desperate 999 call of father-of-one who died in blaze

The desperate final phone call of a father-of-one killed in the Grenfell Tower blaze has been played an the inquiry into the devastating fire that claimed 72 victims.

"Goodbye, we are leaving this world, goodbye. Goodbye to all," were the final words of Mohamed Saber Neda who perished in the June 14 blaze.

The clip was played in an emotional commemoration hearing to the victims of the inferno during which pre-recorded videos were played and statements read out in front of retired judge Sir Martin Moore-Bick.

Lawyers for Saber's family read emotive statement's from the entrepreneur's brother, son Farhad and wife Flora hailing the "proud, kind" family man.

Family photos were shown to a packed hearing at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in south Kensington including images of Saber's "two proudest moments" - his son's university graduation and his engagement party.

"He was looking forward to the possibility of grandchildren and what lies ahead for his son," his wife of 27 years wrote in a statement.

It is "just so sad" he will not be there to enjoy his son's wedding, she added.

"There is a heavy sense of loss within our hearts that will never, ever go away. He was my husband, he was my best friend, I miss him so much. He will always be the love of my life."

The couple moved to the UK in 1998 with their son, who was aged seven, after fleeing the Taliban.

They were "immensely proud" of their flat in the 24-storey tower block close to Latimer Road Tube station.

"Our door was always open, we have lost many friends including two young girls on our floor," Flora's statement added.

Her husband was hailed a hero by his brother who claimed he sacrificed himself to save others trying to flee the burning building.

He said in a statement: "The only thing I know is that my brother was a hero, he sacrificed himself in that fire in order to help his friends."

Both Mr Saber's wife and son were left in a coma following the fire. His family hunted desperately for the 57-year-old in the days that followed the blaze until police eventually confirmed his death on June 24.

The hearing also heard from the families of stillborn baby boy Logan Gomes and father-of-one Denis Murphy.

In a heartbreaking tribute to his baby son Marcio Gomes said: "“I held my son in my arms that evening, hoping it was all a bad dream, wishing, praying for any kind of miracle...that he would just open his eyes, move, make a sound.”

The hearing is expected to last nine days.

The names of all 72 victims, including Maria Pilar Burton who died from her injuries in January, are expected to be read out on the last day of proceedings.
