ABC is going to be taking its TGIT favourites Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How To Get Away with Murder away from fans in the US just before Christmas. Bah humbug!

But all three shows will be back before you can name all of Kris Kringle's reindeers, so it's a classic bad news/good news scenario for Thank God It's Thursday fanatics stateside.

The trio of Shonda Rhimes dramas are bowing out from 8pm to 11pm ET tonight (November 16) with cliffhangers that we're sure fans will be grappling with for the next two months.

Luckily, those same viewers will get some answers when Grey's Anatomy returns at 8pm ET on Thursday, January 18, followed by Scandal at 9pm ET and How To Get Away with Murder at 10pm ET.

Scandal will be airing the first of 11 episodes leading up to its series finale in the spring. ABC president Channing Dungey broke the sad news over the summer that she and Shonda Rhimes both agreed that it was time to retire the Gladiators.

"I had conversions with Shonda Rhimes where she has had for a while a sense of how she wanted the story to end," Dungey told reporters.

"She said, 'Look, I really feel like season seven is where I want to wrap up this story, because I always prefer to end a show where you're feeling on top as opposed to letting things fizzle out'."

Yet fellow Shonda Rhimes drama series Grey's Anatomy just aired its 300th episode - yes, Three Hundred Episodes! - and shows no signs of fizzing out just yet.
