Group Chants as Robert E Lee Statue Removed From Richmond Pedestal

A statue of the Confederate general Robert E Lee was removed from its pedestal in Richmond, Virginia – the capital of the Confederacy – on the morning of September 8.

The crowd can be heard chanting “the people united will never be defeated” in this footage posted by Paige McCleary to Instagram, showing the scene on Monument Avenue.

The statue was taken down following a ruling by the state Supreme Court against two lawsuits that sought to block a removal order issued by Virginia Gov Ralph Northam. Credit: Paige McCleary via Storyful
