Guillermo Del Toro Exits Justice League Dark

It looks as though Guillermo Del Toro has had enough of DC’s ‘Justice League Dark’… as the iconic director leaves the troubled project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming ‘Justice League Dark’ movie has hit a major bump in the road… with director Guillermo Del Toro choosing not to stick around.

“[Justice League Dark] was to have been directed by Guillermo del Toro,” they said, “but insiders say the filmmaker, who is working on a sequel to Pacific Rim even as he preps his gothic horror movie Crimson Peak, is no longer attached to the project.”

Of course, this news comes as a number of DC movies make the jump from Warner Bros. to its subsidiary studio, New Line – including Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s upcoming Neil Gaiman adaptation, ‘Sandman’.

But while ‘Justice League Dark’ will be sticking with Warner Bros. it seems that Guillermo Del Toro won’t be.

“Justice League Dark, which is also known as Dark Universe, will remain under the Warners banner,” they state. “Dark consists of DC’s supernatural heroes such as Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, and Deadman among others. In the past, Constantine and Swamp Thing and some of those ilk had their own titles published under the Vertigo imprint but have since been integrated into the DC Universe. The movie version will attempt the same.”

Obviously, this news doesn’t exactly come as a huge surprise. After all, it’s been a long time since Guillermo Del Toro gave an update on the project, and has seemed to be drifting away from the movie for some time.

And considering the number of other projects he has on his plate, it’s really not surprising.

But could Del Toro’s departure bring hope to ‘Hellboy’ fans?

Rumours of a third ‘Hellboy’ movie have begun to gather momentum, with leading man Ron Perlman gathering a lot of social media attention for the proposed sequel. Could Del Toro be interested in returning to the franchise? It’s certainly an intriguing thought… and after exiting ‘Justice League Dark’, perhaps he’d be more inclined to take on the extra work.

Of course, the timing seems rather curious – with ‘Hellboy 3’ gathering momentum just as Del Toro leaves ‘Justice League Dark’. But is this all a big coincidence, or will this be just the kind of of series of events which will make more sense in time

For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but it’s curious, nonetheless.
