The Handmaid's Tale director Reed Morano has teased that she could be about to swap Gilead for a galaxy far, far away after revealing she had a meeting with Star Wars boss Kathleen Kennedy.

Morano directed the first three episodes of the hit Hulu show's first season, and it seems her work was enough to interest producer extraordinaire Kennedy.

"I guess she was watching with her daughter and then called people and was like, 'Who's this Reed person?' She probably thought I was a guy because of my name," Morano told The Hollywood Reporter.

"She's amazing," the director continued. "We're talking about adventure movies, and I'm not even remembering that she produced Goonies. Any movie that I put my finger on that I loved when I was growing up was a movie that she produced."

Of course, Morano didn't share any details about what was actually discussed in the meeting, but we're all just assuming it was Star Wars-related anyway, right?

"Anyway, it was a great meeting," Morano said. "Obviously, I can't say anything about what else we were talking about."

Although she didn't reveal much, the admission that she has at least met with Kennedy has sparked the rumour that Morano could be named as the Star Wars franchise's first female director.

To date, all the films in the Star Wars franchise – including the original, prequel and sequel trilogies, and the two standalone stories too – have been directed by men, with JJ Abrams picking up with Episode IX and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson confirmed to be working on a new trilogy of films, too.

Still, there are plenty of Star Wars projects scheduled for release over the next few years with no directors attached to them yet, so who's to say Reed Morano couldn't pick up one of them?

That planned live-action TV series sounds like a good fit to us.

The Handmaid's Tale will return to Hulu with a double bill premiere on April 25.
