It looks as though the Marthas will play a much more significant role in Season 2 of The Handmaid's Tale. Amanda Brugel, who gave an understated but compelling performance as Rita throughout the first season, has been promoted to series regular on the Hulu drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

One of the final scenes in the Season 1 finale saw Offred (Elisabeth Moss) passing on key information to Rita, in the form of her secret stash of letters from Handmaids across the country, so it makes sense that her role will be expanded.

The Marthas - women who are used as domestic servants - were a memorable but fairly mysterious aspect of the first season, and though we assume infertility is all that separates them from the Handmaids, it's never been made explicitly clear.

Alexis Bledel, who appeared in just four episodes of the first season, has also been upped to a series regular. The Handmaid's Tale will go back into production this autumn, with the 13-episode Season 2 set to premiere in 2018.
