The first teaser for Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright's new series Renegade Nell has been released.

The new fantasy action show sees Derry Girls star Louisa Harland take on the titular character of Nell Jackson, who becomes "the most notorious outlaw in 18th Century England" after being framed for murder.

In the teaser for the Disney+ show, high society is shocked by the emergence of the "highway woman", noting: "She fights as though she's possessed. She's unnatural. She is formidable."

Nell then tells a foe: "You don't want to mess with me," before breaking into laughter.

The character crosses paths with magical spirit Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed), who ensures her that he is on her "side" and will "protect" her, and she ingests him to gain supernatural powers.

"I'm beginning to wonder if you're not destined for very great things," Billy adds.

The trailer comes ahead of Renegade Nell's release on March 29, with all eight episodes set to debut at the same time.

The full synopsis reads: "Nell Jackson, a quick-witted and courageous young woman, finds herself framed for murder and unexpectedly becomes the most notorious outlaw in 18th century England. But when a magical spirit called Billy Blind appears, Nell realizes her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined."

Alongside Harland and Mohammed, the show stars The Gentleman's Joely Richardson, Fear the Walking Dead's Frank Dillane, Line of Duty's Craig Parkinson, Trigger Point's Adrian Lester, The Lazarus Project's Ényì Okoronkwo and The Crown's Pip Torrens.

The series has been written and created by Wainwright, who is also behind hits such as Last Tango in Halifax and Gentleman Jack, and is directed by Sex Education's Ben Taylor, Gentlemen Jack's Amanda Brotchie and Ted Lasso's MJ Delaney.

Renegade Nell premieres on Disney+ on March 29, 2024.
