Harry Potter's JK Rowling is "not directly involved" with the new Hogwarts Legacy game, WB Games has confirmed.

Revealed at the PlayStation 5 Showcase on Wednesday (September 16), the open-world RPG, which allows players to create their own wizard, is set in the world first introduced in the Harry Potter books, but the writer had nothing to do with the creation of the game, nor is it based on a new story of hers.

"JK Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game, however, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World," WB Games said in a statement. "This is not a new story from JK Rowling."

The entertainment company also confirmed that the game isn't adapted from any of the existing books or films, but it will remain true to JK Rowling's original work." It will, however, "chart new territory by creating fresh ways for fans to immerse themselves in the Wizarding World."

The official description for the game reads: "Hogwarts Legacy is an immersive, open-world action RPG set in the world first introduced in the Harry Potter books.

"Now you can take control of the action and be at the centre of your own adventure in the Wizarding World.

"Embark on a journey through familiar and new locations as you explore and discover fantastic beasts, customise your character and craft potions, master spell casting, upgrade talents, and become the wizard you want to be."

It continues: "Experience Hogwarts in the 1800s. Your character is a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the Wizarding World apart. You have received a late acceptance to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and soon discover that you are no ordinary student: you possess an unusual ability to perceive and master Ancient Magic.

"Only you can decide if you will protect this secret for the good of all, or yield to the temptation of more sinister magic."

Hogwarts Legacy will be available on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and is set for release in 2021.
