Hawaii residents evacuated as volcano erupts

The Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island came to life on Thursday, belching ash into the sky and spewing fountains of lava in a residential area where people were ordered to leave their homes, officials said. Ryan Brooks reports. Thousands of Hawaii residents have fled their homes after one of the island chain's volcanoes spewed clouds of ash and lava into residential areas. The Kilaeua Volcano on Hawaii's Big Island erupted on Thursday (May 4) after days of tremors. The eruption sent fiery magma into the streets and forced the evacuation of around 1700 people from the Puna area. Pictures showed cracks opening up in the streets and one witness told local media he'd seen fountains of lava up to 125 feet high.
