'My Heart Is Broken': Reporter Helps Rabbit Fleeing California Wildfire

Journalist Austin Dave was covering the Soledad Fire near Agua Dulce, California, on July 5 when he came across a rabbit that was “on fire” as it fled the blaze.

“My heart is broken,” Dave wrote on Instagram. “This little bunny was on fire when it ran from its habitat. Gave him some water and shelter for a bit before he ran off.”

Cal Fire said late on July 8 that the fire was at around 1,500 acres and 68 percent contained.

In a further Facebook post with footage of the visibly shaken rabbit, Dave pleaded with people to avoid setting off fireworks.

He said, “Your firework fun has the potential to spark a bush fire like this and wipe out habitats for more wildlife here in Southern California. Your fun goes beyond your bubble.”

The cause of the Soledad Fire was under investigation, but a local fire chief deputy told 10 News fireworks were seen being used in the area around the time it started. Credit: Austin Dave via Storyful
