This is the heartbreaking picture of a birthday boy whose friends failed to show up for his party.

American news anchor Nick VinZant posted an image of the boy, Teddy, on his own at a pizza restaurant.

He is surrounded by empty chairs, unused paper plates and barely-touched pizzas.

His friends had been unable to come to the party, Mr VinZant said on Facebook.

“If you get a chance,” the post read, “please wish Teddy a happy birthday.

"His mom sent me this after his friends weren't able to make it to his birthday party.”

The presenter, from Arizona, was flooded with hundreds of goodwill messages.

And Teddy’s mother, Sil Mazzini, posted: “Thanks you guys. I am showing him these messages and he is already smiling!”

Among all the happy birthday messages, a pest and termite control company took it a step further by offering a free limousine ride.

The company, called Truly Nolen, said to Ms Mazzini: “We TRULY want to do something special for him to help make up for what happened this past weekend.

“As you may be aware, our company is based in Tucson. We would love to take you and your son for a special birthday ride in our Mouse Limo one weekend soon. We'll include some extra goodies to make it a birthday to remember!”
