Heartstopper star Rhea Norwood has teased that season three will be "darker" than previous seasons.

The third instalment arrives on streaming service Netflix on October 3, with Norwood returning to play Imogen alongside show leads Kit Connor and Joe Locke.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy about her new theatre role in West End musical Cabaret, the actor shared what viewers can expect from Heartstopper season three.

"I think as a series as a whole it’s getting more mature. The characters are getting older, so they’re exploring some darker themes," she told us.

Despite the new focus, Norwood assured that these themes will be covered in a serious but heartfelt way.

"Hopefully they will be tackled in the way that Heartstopper does it, really beautifully, which is through a really lovely Heartstopper lens, I like to call it."

While Norwood wasn't able to share more about the upcoming season, she did open up on her experience meeting Bridgerton's Jonathan Bailey, who has a special guest role in the third season.

In April, it was announced that Bailey will make a cameo appearance as author Jack Maddox, known as "Charlie's Instagram-famous crush".

"We’re not in a scene together but I got to meet [Bailey]," she told Digital Spy. "We crossed paths. He was in when I was filming, and I would sneak behind the monitor and watch him do his magic.

"He is the most charming man you’ll ever meet, he was so lovely. I did fan-girl over him."

Other new cast additions for season three include Marvel star Hayley Atwell and Back to Black's Eddie Marsan.

Norwood is currently busy entertaining audiences away from screen in the London run of Cabaret, performed at the Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre.

The actor plays the iconic Sally Bowles in the production, which also features Strictly's Layton Williams as the Emcee.

"Sally has been my dream role since I was 16," she told us, calling the experience "magical" to date. She and Williams will appear in performances up until September 21.

Tickets for Cabaret can be bought at ATG Tickets and Love Theatre.

Heartstopper seasons 1-2 are streaming on Netflix. Season 3 will premiere on Netflix on October 3.
