A dad who lost his life saving his son after a devastating house fire can today be named as Barry Mason.

Mr Mason's four year-old son, Ethan Mason, is fighting for his life in hospital in a medically-induced coma after being pulled from the blaze by his father.

The boy's family said Barry had 'ran back inside to save his little boy' after the fire in the early hours of Sunday on Warrington Road, Wigan.

Bolton Coroner's Court confirmed today Barry Mason's death has been referred to the coroner ahead of an inquest opening. Four others were also injured in the horror blaze. No age for Mr Mason has been revealed.

Fire investigation teams and police officers remained at the scene of the fire on Monday (April 15) as investigations continued.

Neighbours told how they woke up to the sound of screams before emergency services descended on the scene at a semi-detached house.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed on Sunday the fire broke out in the kitchen of the home, at around 2.30am, before spreading up to the roof. Pictures taken at the scene show a badly damaged and scorched roof after the flames were eventually put out.

Ethan suffered severe burns to his body and is now in an induced coma in hospital. He suffered 86 per cent burns to his body, his auntie Jessica said on a Go Fund Me page, and has since undergone major surgery.

The burns have been reduced slightly, but he is still bravely fighting for his life, the Liverpool Echo reports. Jessica said he is likely to be in a coma 'for some time'.

She said the last thing Ethan's dad did was 'run back into a burning house and save his little boy'. Posting on the fundraising page, she said: "These next few days are crucial and Ethan now only has a 10 per cent chance of getting through this.

"We are all absolutely heartbroken, but my sister and her other children have lost absolutely everything. Please keep hoping and praying for him."

More than £16,000 has been raised so far, which will go to the family.

The Manchester Evening News understands the investigation is still in its early stages and that firefighters remained at the scene to 'preserve the site'. No further updates have been provided by Greater Manchester Police.
