Heung-min Son 'always ready' to make the most of his Tottenham chances

No one at Tottenham is in better form than Heung-min Son, but the forward has admitted that he must deliver in every game or risk returning to the bench.

The South Korea international inspired Spurs to a 5-1 win over Stoke on Saturday with an exhilarating display, scoring for the fifth time in his past six starts and bagging two assists.

Spurs have struggled to break down the Premier League’s lesser clubs at Wembley and there was a familiarly disjointed quality to their attacking before Son forced Ryan Shawcross to turn into his own net after 21 minutes.

He then broke Stoke’s resistance with a cool finish at the start of the second half and also set up Christian Eriksen’s strike after Harry Kane’s double.

Shawcross’ late consolation goal could not prevent Spurs from becoming the first club in top-flight history to beat the same opponent by four goals or more in four consecutive meetings.

Son has been in and out of the team since joining Spurs for £22million in 2015 and, unlike automatic starters Kane, Eriksen and Dele Alli, knows he is likely to dropped if he does not deliver, particularly now that Erik Lamela is back after his long-term injury.

"You never know when your chance is coming," Son said. "You always have to be ready and you have to always be there.

"Sometimes you’re going to play 20 minutes or 10 minutes or 90 minutes. I’m just thinking that whenever I’m on the pitch, I need to make something happen and help my team-mates."

Two of Spurs’ best performances at Wembley - the 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund and the 4-1 thrashing of Liverpool - have also been inspired by Son, and they scored as many goals in the demolition of Stoke as in the six games against Chelsea, Burnley, Swansea, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and West Brom at their temporary home.

"We had a big problem with these teams when they defended with 10 players," he said. "It’s difficult. I enjoy every stadium but I liked White Hart Lane. I really miss it."

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino hailed Son’s performance, saying: "We always encourage players to be brave, aggressive and to look forward. He [put in] a great performance."
