High School Musical: The Musical: The Series spoilers follow.

What's up, Wildcats? Excited to revisit East High? At the time of writing, Disney has not yet confirmed that High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will be returning for a third season. But don't fret. We're all in this together, and besides, we're extremely confident that the show will be renewed. In fact, we'd even bet on it, especially if that season two finale is anything to go by.

So grab some risotto (too soon?), do your stretches, and grab that mic as we sing and dance our way through everything we know so far about HSM:TM:TS season three.

Without an official renewal to go by, we're not sure exactly when season three will arrive on Disney+. But assuming that filming starts soon, new episodes could appear as soon as summer 2022.

Eighteen months passed between the first two seasons with a cute holiday special thrown in the middle, but now that the industry is coping better with pandemic restrictions, season three may take just one year to complete.

When school's back in session, expect all of the following to return for season three:

  • Olivia Rodrigo as Nini Salazar-Roberts

  • Joshua Bassett as Ricky Bowen

  • Matt Cornett as EJ Caswell

  • Sofia Wylie as Gina Porter

  • Larry Saperstein as Big Red

  • Julia Lester as Ashlyn Caswell

  • Dara Reneé as Kourtney Greene

  • Frankie Rodriguez as Carlos Rodriguez

  • Mark St Cyr as Benjamin Mazzara

  • Kate Reinders as Miss Jenn

  • Joe Serafini as Seb Matthew-Smith

Jordan Fisher may also end up playing a bigger role in the future after his character, Jamie Porter, made an impact at the end of season two.

Of course, following Olivia Rodrigo's incredible success as a solo artist, there are some concerns that Nini may go bye-bye very soon. Just recently, Olivia told The Guardian that she is "committed to HSM for two more years", which bodes well for that season three renewal (and season four too). However, it doesn't seem likely that Rodrigo will stay beyond that as she wants to focus more on her own music moving forward.

"I think it's really hard to split time between the two and there are very few artists who do that efficiently, because acting is based on being a good liar and presenting a version of yourself that's believable, and being a songwriter is the complete opposite. It's like, here are all of my deepest, darkest secrets and I want you to know me so personally."

HSM:TM:TS season 3 plot: What will the third season be about?

Like season two, we imagine that season three will avoid following the High School Musical movie blueprint, instead choosing another musical to perform. And that's assuming the show even sticks to the musical format at all moving forward. This show does have a habit of going its own way, after all, and there's enough personal drama happening now to fuel a season that avoids this.

At the end of season two, the Wildcats decided that they don't want to compete at the Menkies anymore, and surprisingly enough, Miss Jen agreed. And that's not even the most surprising thing that happened in the finale.

Benjamin revealed to Miss Jen that he might not end up going to California because he would rather stay with her and try to move things forward romantically. Elsewhere, EJ almost messed things up with Gina, but at the last minute, they realised their mistakes and decided to share their very first kiss.

Gina's brother, Jamie, also made an impact when he offered to work with Nini on producing her music. The future's looking bright for her, but not so much for Ricky, her past love, because he's calling up the mean girl from the rival school for a date. And little does he know that she was the one who sabotaged his transformation scene in Beauty and the Beast...

At least Carlos and Seb are doing well. Expect them to break more ground for LGBTQ+ representation when season three arrives, along with a whole lot of drama from everything else we just recapped from season two.

Right here, right now, there's no new footage to share, but don't worry. We'll be sticking to the status quo like always, which means that season three's trailer will definitely appear here as soon as it becomes available.

Seasons one and two of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series are now available to watch in full on Disney+.
