Hijack has been confirmed for a second season, which will see Idris Elba's Sam Nelson in a new "top secret" situation.

The Apple TV+ thriller's first outing became a big hit upon its release last year, both with critics and in terms of viewership.

The story follows a seven-hour flight from Dubai to London which gets hijacked, with corporate business negotiator Nelson using his skills to try and end the situation.

Apple has now revealed that a follow-up season is on the way, with Elba promising more "high octane" antics to come.

"I was floored by the overwhelming audience response after season one," the star said. "It's top secret what new situation unfolds for Sam Nelson but I can assure you we will bring the high octane back!"

Apple TV+'s Europe creative director Jay Hunt added: "Global audiences were on tenterhooks watching Idris's riveting performance in Hijack, and we're thrilled to be working again with 60Forty and Idiotlamp on an equally compelling season two."

Elba previously addressed the idea of a second season, suggesting that Nelson could be put in a different situation.

"I'd like to see Sam come back," he told TV Insider. "It's got to be clever, and we can see him make decisions that are impossible to make.

"And I think that's going to be fun for the audience, but it has to be the right setup. So who knows? If the audience really wants it, it's going to happen."

As well as Elba, season one starred Archie Panjabi, Christine Adams, Eve Myles and Max Beesley.

Hijack is available to stream on Apple TV+.
