More than half of all Americans believe history will judge Donald Trump badly.

Fifty one per cent think the controversial current US president will be judged as either “poor” or “below average”. The majority of those – 39% – said he would be rated as “poor”.

And 44 per cent also think Trump is “racist” – though 40% said he was not – and Trump himself has said he is not following a recent spat over using the word ‘s***hole’ to describe certain countries.

The results were part of a The Economist/YouGov poll, which surveyed 1500 adult Americans earlier this month.

The poll will make unsettling reading for the 45th president of the United States.

Among the other findings, the poll shows that 80% of Americans think the President ‘ reacts and speaks without thinking very much’, 41% says he deliberately says incorrect things and 56% think he is a bad role model for the country’s children.

The findings were made public at the same time as he faces the latest scandal of his presidency over lurid claims about his affair with a porn actress.

The poll also shows him comparing badly to his predecessors.

Asked if they thought he was less intelligent than president such as Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan or George Bush, 44% agreed.

Another 43% claimed he worked less hard and 49% said he was less competent.

The study was carried out between January 14-16th.
