Holby City's series producer Jane Wallbank has spoken out about the backlash over Bernie Wolfe's off-screen death.

Fans were left devastated when it was revealed that Bernie had been killed in action last month, especially as it closes the door on popular couple 'Berena'.

Bernie made the decision to return to a military hospital in France back in 2017, but did make a final appearance when she briefly returned last December.

Explaining about the decision to kill off Bernie, Jane said to Digital Spy: "I loved the Berena story as a viewer, which played out before I joined.

"When a character has left a show, you want the best story for the characters who remain, and here it’s the powerful repercussions and her legacy that play out for Serena, Alex and also Cameron."

Speaking about what's next for a grief-stricken Serena now, Jane added: "Serena’s a great survivor. After taking stock of her life, she comes back even stronger than before and determined to fight for what she believes in, professionally and for her family and loved ones.

"There is a brilliant New Year’s Eve episode which brings a powerful twist and a reminder from a few years back that brings out all the power and steel in Serena's personality. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s pretty startling."

Holby City continues on Tuesday, August 27 at 8pm on BBC One
