Holby City spoilers follow.

Laila Rouass will be back at Holby City Hospital as cardiothoracic surgeon Sahira Shah next week.

The actress first appeared in Holby City a decade ago, but decided to quit her role one year into her tenure to focus on her family.

But now, nine years on, Sahira is replacing Rosie Marcel's Jac Naylor on the ward – a character she feuded with back in the day.

It goes down onscreen like this: when Max puts Kian on desk duty, he's left slightly irked, but when Sahira turns up for her first day back at Holby, he convinces himself that he'll be able to sweet-talk her.

Unaffected by Kian's charms, she moves on alongside an intrigued Chloe and Nicky, before feeling touched by the warmth of her elderly patient and their partner.

However, things start to go wrong in theatre and Sahira is left crushed and heartbroken by events.

Meanwhile, following her iconic character's exit this week, Marcel herself sat down with Digital Spy to reflect.

"I'm sad obviously – I love the show and I've been there a really long time," she explained.

"It got to a stage where I was just so tired and I really needed that break, to the point where I've not really done anything else and I don't want to – I want to take time off. I'm well-slept currently, which is very nice.

"I wanted to have a break and spend time with family – I haven't spent a lot of time with my daughter or my husband. I didn't want to get to a point in my life where I thought, 'I really wish I'd taken time off' – I didn't want to be that person with regrets. It was a big decision."

Holby City continues on Wednesday, February 10 at 8.20pm on BBC One.
