Milan is looking to ban the sale of ice cream and fast food after midnight to bring residents 'peace and tranquillity' from noisy tourists. Many punters will look forward to traditional Milanese ice cream or a spot of pizza during a midnight feast, but proposed legislation would see sales banned as early as May.

City officials have said the after-midnight legislation is necessary to protect citizens of Milan, with Marco Granelli - the city's deputy mayor writing on Facebook earlier this month: "The goal is to seek a balance between socialising and entertainment, and the peace and tranquillity of residents."

Officials added in a statement that the legislation would ban street vendors from busy streets as of 8pm, with mayor Guiseppe Sala last month saying: "A sizeable segment of the population is complaining about excessive noise," according to EuroNews.

The Mirror reports that the proposed law would be rolled out as soon as mid-May, and would run until November. Fast food would be banned for sale after 12.30am on weekdays and 1.30am on weekends and public holidays.

Sky News say that the ban would apply to outdoor tables only, in a bid to clear the streets - and Milanese residents have until early May to appeal or suggest amendments to the legislation.

It's not the first time that Milan has attempted to ban ice cream sales after midnight either - with a 2013 move by then-mayor Giuliano Pisapia attempting to bring in similar measures before being forced to make a U-turn through backlash.
