Hollyoaks continues to implicate Liam Donovan in the on-going Who Shot Mercedes McQueen storyline.

Mercedes's jealous former lover Liam (Jude Monk McGowan) was last seen being arrested by DS Cohen (Ariana Fraval) and her investigator after trying to flee the village with a gun earlier this week.

Friday's (November 8) first-look episode revealed that Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) remains in a medically-induced coma as the doctors treat sepsis — so she's definitely unable to offer any insight on her shooter.

Liam remained under intense interrogation from DS Cohen, with the investigator revealing that her team had matched the gun found in his possession with the one used to shoot Mercy.

In spite of that bombshell evidence, Liam refused to crack in the interrogation room. His sister Grace Black (Tamara Wall) was at that same time convincing a sceptical James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan) to represent Liam.

Never one to turn down a high-profile case, James arrived at the police station to reveal that he'd gone over DS Cohen's head to complain to her supervisor that she'd unfairly targeted Liam.

James also name-dropped former Hollyoaks character DS Yates, revealing he'd reached out to the bent copper to get him on-side to back-up Liam's innocence. With all of that new evidence, Liam was released without charge.

This infuriated Sylver (David Tag), since he'd been the one to point the police towards Liam. Sylver was especially furious that Grace played a role in freeing Liam after their fling earlier this week.

However, the episode ended on another jaw-dropping twist when a flashback showed that Liam had been in The Loft on the night of Mercedes's shooting after all — in fact, he'd been standing over her unconscious body!

Is this a mystery solved?

Hollyoaks airs Mondays through Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first-look episodes airing on E4 at 7pm.
