Hollyoaks' James Nightingale receives new threat over Mercedes shooting

From Digital Spy

James Nightingale is facing threats from all sides as he continues to crack in Hollyoaks.

The lawyer has struggled in recent weeks over shooting Mercedes McQueen with Grace Black, after learning that she was not responsible for his partner Harry Thompson's death.

James's guilt has only increased following Jesse Donovan's death too, as Jesse had discovered the truth about Mercy's shooting on the night he died.

Monday's first-look episode (February 24) on E4 opened with James (Gregory Finnegan) waking up from a sleeping pill-induced slumber with no plans to attend Jesse's funeral.

Furious Grace (Tamara Wall) turned up at his flat demanding he "get dressed or [she'd] drag [him] in his pyjamas" — but events of the day spiralled beyond either of their wildest fears.

At the service, James worried when Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) confronted him to claim that she knew all about his "secret".

But momentary panic subsided when Mercy revealed she was talking about James reigniting his chemistry with John Paul (James Sutton), telling the lawyer: "You're only sucking up to us because we know you're getting cosy with John Paul.

"You hurt him, your funeral will be the next in this village."

Before the funeral got underway, guilt-ridden James could no longer hold himself together when Jesse's wife Courtney (Amy Conachan) admitted that she blamed herself for her husband's tragic death.

James shocked everyone in the service by shouting that Courtney needed to know "the truth", before Grace hurried him out of the hall to set him straight.

"This shame is our punishment, and we have to live through it. For our kids," she insisted.

Once she returned, Grace pacified Courtney by telling her James identified with her feeling guilty over what happened to Jesse because of his own experience with Harry.

"The truth is, this wasn't your fault," Grace told Courtney.

But after a dinner with John Paul and Mercedes, James returned home to another ominous warning — this time a note that read: "I know you shot Mercedes."

Someone is playing mind games with James, but who?
