Yahoo News Hollyoaks' Nikki Sanderson says she "understands" hate towards Maxine
Hollyoaks star Nikki Sanderson has opened up about Maxine Minniver's Munchausen's storyline, admitting she "understands" the hate towards the character.
Maxine has been faking her health concerns due to the condition, which is defined as "a psychological disorder where someone pretends to be ill or deliberately produces symptoms of illness in themselves".
Appearing on today's (August 20) Lorraine, Nikki spoke about the fan reaction to the storyline, admitting that while the hate was strong initially, people have been more sympathetic since becoming more familiar with the condition.
"Do you know what, I understand why there's been a lot of negativity and a lot of hate towards this," she said.
"Because if you didn't know she had Munchausen's or you don't know what Munchausen's is, to everybody she's just this lying, deceitful, manipulative, horrible person who's just trying to do all these things to get attention and love from Damon and the people around her.
"So I can understand why people have been so negative, but I'm seeing a difference now it's been revealed she has Munchausen's, more people are understanding the condition, people are more sympathetic towards her.
"Because they understand that she doing this not necessarily because she's evil, she's doing this because she's ill.
"I think more people are starting to understand. So, the negativity isn't as bad as it was, but people did and do hate Maxine for what she's doing, and understandably so."
Meanwhile, Maxine is due to have a "living funeral" on the soap, and it sounds like things will go horribly wrong.
Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4. Lorraine airs weekday mornings at 8.30am on ITV.
