Hollyoaks star James Sutton promises big new John Paul story

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks' John Paul is set to have another tough year. In scenes to air next week, we'll see John Paul relapse into alcoholism following a slip up at Goldie's anti-Valentine's Day party.

And, it seems like the resulting hardships are just the tip of the iceberg, with actor James Sutton hinting that John Paul has a big storyline coming up in the near future.

James described the path that his character is on, saying (via Inside Soap): "John Paul promises Matthew-Jesus he'll take him to a theme park, but he lets him down. Instead, they go to the local park; they're having a nice time, but John Paul is drinking.

"People notice that he isn't in control of his faculties, and Matthew feels that second-hand embarrassment for his dad. He's ashamed of him."

It looks like his behaviour might tear the family apart dramatically, with Mathew-Jesus set to move to Alicante with Granny Myra thanks to his dad's behaviour. Can things be fixed?

"Unless John Paul makes some bold, decisive choices about how he lives his life, he's inevitably going to succumb to alcohol again. John Paul will always be an alcoholic; you don't get cured. It's often when things are going well, when people are feeling strong that they think it's okay to have one drink."

The actor ominously added: "There's a lot of scope to explore that with John Paul, and where that might lead him..."

And, it seems like things won't get any easier for John Paul in the future. James hinted: "Everyone wants to play the bad guy, so it would be nice to explore a darker side to John Paul. I have a big storyline coming up this year that I'm excited about. Fundamentally, the writers just like to see me cry!"
