Hollyoaks star Joe McGann has hinted at how his character Edward Hutchinson would react to seeing his son Tony returning to the village.

Edward and Tony's wife Diane Hutchinson (Alex Fletcher) both believe that Tony has run off with an old girlfriend, though he has actually been held hostage at serial killer Breda McQueen's (Moya Brady) farm.

There will finally be a chance at freedom next week when Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe) discovers him in Hollyoaks Later, though they'll have to escape another trap from Breda first.

Just as Tony gets his shot at freedom, Edward and Diane take their secret romance public when they attend a medical fundraiser together in the village.

Edward's feelings for Diane could certainly cause some complications if Tony reappears, especially since Joe McGann admits the doctor doesn't view his son's absence "as a bad thing" right now.

"I think that we would see the genuine love that Edward has for Tony, but Edward tends to be of the more disciplinarian type," he teased. "He's come through the army, and he very much believes that 'man-up' is the way to do things, which is not necessarily what Tony needs.

"It could lead to a little bit of conflict, but I think his concern would genuinely kick in if he sees Tony hurt, not only because he's a doctor, but also because he's a father."

Complicating the family dynamic even further will be the arrival of Edward's daughter (and Tony's sister) Verity (Eva O'Hara).

"I think that they have a very good relationship," McGann said of father and daughter. "I would think that because he's now just a single parent, and also because of the kind of way fathers are with daughters, they have a very special relationship.

"She's under no illusions of what her dad is like in terms of being a schemer, but he's her dad and I think they have a good honest straight relationship."
