Hollywood gives honorary Oscar to veteran star Mel Brooks

Hollywood veteran Mel Brooks was honoured as the film industry's biggest stars gathered on the red carpet again only hours after the Golden Globes ceremony.

Talent including Margot Robbie, Florence Pugh, Natalie Portman, Carey Mulligan, Claire Foy and Bradley Cooper were among the A-listers at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences 14th Governors Awards in Los Angeles.

The event is dubbed the honourary Oscars and allows the Academy to recognise talent outside the time restrictions of the annual awards with What’s Love Got To Do With It star Angela Bassett among those being recognised.

There was also an award for veteran comedian and filmmaker Brooks – the 97 year old is known for films including the classic comedy Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.

The New Yorker, who was married to The Graduate star Anne Bancroft until her death in 2005, previously won an Oscar in 1969 for his screenplay for The Producers and is one of a select group of stars who has EGOT status – meaning he has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

Awards season kicked off with the Golden Globes earlier this week with Oppenheimer winning big with five major awards including British filmmaker Christopher Nolan named best director while Irish actor Cillian Murphy won the award for best actor in a drama for his portrayal of the father of the atomic bomb.

Success at the Golden Globes can often be a predictor for Oscars glory with this year’s Academy Awards taking place in Los Angeles on March 10.
