Home and Away lines up dramatic rescue scenes for Ryder

Home and Away spoilers follow for Australian and UK viewers.

Home and Away will air dramatic scenes for Ryder Jackson as the soap's new season begins in Australia next week, as his loved ones race to rescue him from a burial stunt that has gone horribly wrong.

The soap's season finale, which aired at the end of November, saw Ryder (Lukas Radovich) and Theo Poulos (Matt Evans) embark on another video challenge which involved Ryder being buried alive in a coffin in an area of bushland and livestreaming the challenge online in order to earn some cash.

As Ryder prepared to spend five hours in the buried coffin, Theo decided to leave his post watching over Ryder's burial site and go to get some lunch – but while returning, he tripped over, fell down a ravine and was knocked unconscious.

When the soap returns to Aussie screens, TV Week writes that Ryder will remain trapped underground with his breath becoming ragged as the hours pass and his oxygen begins to run out.

Ryder continues to phone Theo but receives no answer as Theo lies in the ravine, out cold. As Ryder's phone battery starts to dip, he checks the live feed where their prank is streaming and a viewer suggests that he only has 19 minutes until he will run out of oxygen.

While Ryder laughs off the comment, not wanting to show how afraid he is, he starts to panic about how he will get out of the situation, aware that he could be in serious trouble.

When Theo finally wakes up, he discovers that his leg is trapped in some barbed wire, while his phone has fallen out of reach. Unable to contact Ryder and with his leg in terrible pain, Theo realises that he has no way of getting help for himself and Ryder.

Back in Summer Bay, Alf Stewart (Ray Meagher) and Justin Morgan (James Stewart) bump into each other and ask whether the other has seen Ryder and Theo. Realising that neither of them has come home, Alf and Justin begin to worry.

Justin tracks down Roo Stewart (Georgie Parker) to find out if she has any information, but she confirms that she hasn't seen either of them.

When Justin finds Ryder and Theo's online channel where they are streaming the burial challenge, Roo recognises the area where the coffin has been buried and she and Justin race off to find the pair.

Back in the coffin, Ryder's phone slips out of his hand and he loses consciousness as his oxygen supply dwindles. Will Roo and Justin find him in time?

Actor Lukas explained why Ryder has been so willing to undertake these dangerous stunts, revealing that he is desperate to repay Roo and Alf after they lent him money to launch his catering business.

"After losing the food truck with no insurance, he has a strong sense of duty and responsibility and believes this is the only way to make enough money to pay everyone back," he said.

But could Ryder end up paying the ultimate price for his efforts?
