Homemade Explosive Detonates and Kills Man Inside His Hawaii Home, Police Say: ‘Tragic Incident'

Authorities in Hawaii say a local man has died after a homemade explosive apparently went off at his home earlier this week.

Jasper Gunsell, 37, was found dead Monday evening inside his home in Kīlauea, according to a news release from the Kaua'i Police Department, shared by the county.

The victim seemingly sustained "extensive injuries consistent with an explosive event," per the release.

An autopsy was performed on Tuesday, the department said. Results from the autopsy and an investigation into the incident determined foul play did not factor into Gunsell’s death.

It is unclear what kind of explosive the victim was in possession of when the incident occurred. It is also unclear what caused the explosive to detonate.

Assistant Chief Paul Applegate, of the KPD’s Investigative Services Bureau, thanked their federal partners for assisting with the investigation, “as our joint mission in keeping our community safe is paramount.”

Applegate also offered “sincere condolences and support to Mr. Gunsell’s family and friends” on behalf of the KPD.

The department is now reminding the public “of the inherent dangers of creating and handling homemade explosives.”

“Such activities are not only illegal under Hawai’i law,” the KPD said, “but as this tragic incident illustrates, they pose a severe risk to the individual involved and the wider community.”
