Horror as girl suffers head injury after crash on main road

A girl suffered a head injury after a crash on a main road in Bolton on Sunday afternoon (June 16). Police and paramedics descended on Wigan Road in Westhoughton after the incident shortly before 3pm.

There are unconfirmed reports that the girl, thought to have been a young child, was struck by a vehicle before emergency services raced to the scene and blocked the road in both directions.

The North West Ambulance Service has since confirmed the girl was rushed to hospital from the scene to be treated for a head injury.

Pictures from the scene showed police in attendance, with the road blocked in both directions for a number of hours. An ambulance and advanced paramedics also attended.

A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said: "A girl was taken to hospital to be treated for a head injury. An ambulance and advanced paramedic attended following a call at 14.55

Former councillor Anna-Marie Watters, who lives nearby, previously told the M.E.N she witnessed the scene moments after the collision and that a large vehicle had mounted the kerb and crashed into a fence on the opposite side of the road.

Westhoughton South Councillor David Chadwick also confirmed to the Manchester Evening News that it was believed a young child had been involved.

Greater Manchester Police were unable to issue a statement on the incident.
