Hospital ward closed and pest control called in after mouse spotted by patients

Pest controllers have been called in after a mouse was spotted at Hull Royal Infirmary.

A unit of the hospital was closed after patients said they spotted the rodents while they waiting for surgery.

Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust said it seemed a field mouse had made its way into the Day Surgery Unit, prompting several operations to be cancelled and pest control to be called in.

Julie Saunders told the Hull Daily Mail she had spotted the mice while waiting with her son Jack, who was due to have surgery on his hand.

“He just said ‘look at the door there’s a mouse’. I thought he was having me on until I saw one come running out there.

“I saw at least two but someone said they saw four of them.

“They had to close the full unit and send everyone home. I have never seen anything like it.”

A spokesman for Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust said: “We can confirm there has been an isolated incident within our Day Surgery Unit today where it appears a field mouse has made its way into the department. As a result, several operations have been postponed.”

“As a result of the incident we contacted our local pest control service immediately. The team are currently on site working hard to ensure any disruption is minimal and we are aiming to reopen the unit as soon as possible.”
