Hot weather expected next week could increase pressure on hospitals across Nottinghamshire, experts have warned. The UK Health Security Agency, the government agency tasked with protecting public health, has issued a yellow heat-health alert for Monday, June 24 to Thursday, June 27.

Temperatures in Nottinghamshire are predicted to range from the mid to high 20s next week, according to the Met Office. Most of England, apart from the northeast, will be under a heat alert between 8am Monday and 5pm Thursday.

UKHSA medics explained the rising heat could have "significant impacts" on the health and social care sector in the East Midlands. They added this could result in an increase in mortality across the population, particularly amongst those older than 65 years old or with health conditions.

These impacts may also be seen in younger age groups, the alert said. It is likely there will be increased demand for remote healthcare services and that hospital and care homes may be impacted by staff struggling in the heat and overheating rooms.

This could increase the risk to vulnerable people living independently in the community as well as in care settings. Temperatures in care settings may also exceed the recommended threshold for clinical risk assessment, the UKHSA highlighted.
