HSBC issues apology as payment issues affect UK banks

HSBC has issued an apology after payment issues affected a number of UK banks today. Problems were reported at HSBC, alongside Nationwide, Barclays and Virgin Money.

HSBC had said it was working to resolve issues within the app and that customers may experience a "failure notice" while using making payments online, via phone or via the app. Before resending any money, customers were advised to view their recent transactions in the mobile app or check with the recipient.

Elsewhere, Virgin Media acknowledged it was "aware of intermittent issues with accessing online banking and our app, which we're working to resolve as quickly as possible". And Nationwide replied to a string of customers on X complaining that they had not received their wages in their accounts, writing: "These payments are being processed, and will be paid into your account today. Sorry for any inconvenience this is causing."

However in an update issued on X/Twitter at 2.06pm today, June 28, HSBC said: "2pm Update: Online and Mobile Banking services are back up and running and customers can now view recent transactions. The payments issue affecting multiple banks is also resolved. We’re really sorry to those impacted and will continue to monitor systems closely."
