HTC unveiled a limited edition 24K gold One M9 smartphone on Twitter, but the promotion backfired as the photo was clearly taken with an iPhone made by rival tech firm Apple.

Created to mark the weekend's UEFA Champions League final, the HTC handset's shiny gold surface clearly captures the reflection of person taking the snap with an iPhone, rather than one of HTC's own phones.

One of the HTC One M9's key features is its impressive 20MP camera, so having a publicity photo taken with the rival iPhone's 8MP camera was something of a clanger.

Once the the gaffe had been spotted, HTC removed the tweet from its Twitter feed and replaced it with a more suitable picture:
