Huddersfield man banned from town centre for plaguing shoppers breaks it just days later

A man who was banned from Huddersfield town centre from noon, every day, due to his disorderly behaviour, has now been jailed .

It took Andrew Hackin from Chesil Bank, in Huddersfield less than a week break the ban. He was jailed for eight weeks at Leeds Magistrates Court on April 18, for breach of the Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) imposed on him on April 11.

The 51-year-old had been located on Kirkgate by officers during the afternoon of April 17 - six days after being made subject to the order by Huddersfield Magistrates Court .

Hackin had been served with the five-year order due to causing persistent anti-social behaviour, often linked to alcohol, which caused distress to residents and shop staff.

Under the terms of his CBO he was forbidden from entering the area of Huddersfield town centre from Castlegate South and Queensgate after 12 noon every day, unless he had a pre-arranged appointment with services or the police.

He was also prohibited from possessing an open container of alcohol anywhere within the area of Huddersfield town centre protected by a Public Space Protection Order.

PC James Hemsley of the Huddersfield Pro Active Town Centre Team , said: “We welcome this conviction which demonstrates that criminal behaviour orders do work and give us the power to take real action against those who think it is acceptable to behave in a way which is clearly completely unacceptable to those around them.

“Andrew Hackin has caused real distress to shoppers, retail staff and commuters in Huddersfield through his behaviour and was forbidden from entering a defined part of the town centre after noon each day as a result of this. He will now have time to reflect on his behaviour from the inside of a prison cell.”
