Huddersfield Town dealt transfer blow as striker joins League One rivals

Huddersfield Town transfer target Alfie May has completed his move to League One promotion rivals Birmingham City.

The Blues have confirmed that last season’s League One top goalscorer has joined them on a three-year deal from Charlton Athletic, with numerous outlets having claimed that Town were beaten to the signing by the fellow relegated outfit.

Football Insider reported at the back end of last week that the Terriers had a £750,000 bid for the striker accepted by the Addicks, before the same website went on to state that Birmingham had “hijacked” Town’s deal with an offer of £775,000.

Town’s rivals have secured a striker who scored 27 goals in all competitions for the Addicks last term, while the 31-year-old has netted at least 20 times in each of the past three League One campaigns.

“It is a good project to be involved in,” May told his new club’s website. “Speaking with the manager (Chris Davies) and Craig (Gardner, technical director), the journey they want to go on as a club – the club shouldn’t be in League One.

“It is exciting times. I want to hit the ground running, push on, and hopefully get promoted.”

In the Addicks’ club statement confirming May’s departure, the striker added: “It’s a difficult one for me because I’m leaving my hometown, but it’s football and I’m doing it for my family.

“Hopefully I leave on good terms. It’s only been a year, but it’s a year that I won’t forget. I thank everyone for the support and the love they showed me since I first signed.”

Despite reportedly missing out on May, the Terriers have got two signings over the line in recent days, bringing in Mickel Miller and Herbie Kane on free transfers following their departures from Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley respectively.
