Huddersfield village restaurant given low food hygiene rating says issues 'immediately rectified'

A village restaurant given a one-star food hygiene rating was told to make 'urgent improvements' following an inspection earlier this year.

A Kirklees Council inspector who visited Mozzarella's in Marsden, near Huddersfield, noted "many recurring issues from the previous inspection" including a lack of food safety records and some 'structural issues'. The inspector also noted a "lot of very out-of-date food on site which should have been disposed of. These have badly affected your rating."

The Kirklees Council inspector rated the Peel Street premises one star following a visit on February 29 this year. Kirklees Council has now released the inspection report following a Freedom of Information Act request.

The report said: "There was no food safety records available since the week commencing 30th October 2023. Daily diary records and additional checks should be completed. This was raised previously."

According to the Kirklees inspector, several structural matters that were raised before had not been addressed, including the 'poor condition' of the floor near the walk-in fridge. The splashback and cooker were "dirty with food deposits on them," the report added.

The inspector noted that there were "many items past their use-by date" including pepperoni, pasta, risotto rice, and scallops. "Ensure tiles for shelf life are established and understood and food removed when out of date," the report added.

The one-star rating has been published on the Scores on the Doors website and means that 'major improvement' is needed. The rating said improvement was needed in food hygiene and safety, and said structural compliance was 'generally satisfactory'. On the issue of 'confidence in management', the rating was 'major improvement necessary'.

Mozzarella's has an average score of 4.2/5 on Google and 3.5 on Tripadvisor.

A spokesman for Mozzarella's told YorkshireLive: "All issues raised were immediately rectified and we look forward to our re-rating."
