Huge emergency response as boy, 14, goes missing while swimming in River Mersey

A huge search is underway after a 14-year-old boy went missing while swimming in the River Mersey.

The boy was swimming in the river, near to the radar tower at Crosby Beach, with his friends yesterday evening (Sunday) when he went missing, the Liverpool Echo reports. Merseyside Police said his friends came out of the river, but he 'became separated' from them and has not been seen since.

Last night, a search was launched at Crosby Beach with pictures showing a large emergency services presence on the scene. Police officers, fire crews and paramedics responded as well as the Coastguard.

The Coastguard helicopter could be seen circling the area overhead. The search for the 14-year-old boy is ongoing this morning.

Last night, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Just after 7pm emergency services received a report of a concern for safety of a 14-year-old boy who had gone swimming in the River Mersey , near to the radar tower with a group of friends. His friends had come out of the river but had become separated from him and he has not been seen since.

"The incident is ongoing and Crosby beach near to the radar tower has been cordoned off. We are asking people to avoid the area at this time, whilst the emergency services, including the coastguard and North West Ambulance Service, continue searching for the missing boy."

Sefton Council said in a statement: "Police are asking people to avoid the area at this time, whilst the emergency services, including the coastguard and North West Ambulance Service, continue searching for the missing boy."

No further updates have been provided yet this morning.
