Huge fire breaks out at Linwood industrial estate with smoke seen all the way to Glasgow city centre

A huge blaze has broken out at an industrial estate near Paisley with Police Scotland asking people who stay nearby to stay indoors and close their windows and doors for the time being, as a precaution.

Smoke from the fire, which firefighters are currently attending to as the blaze is ongoing, could be seen as far as the city centre and beyond.

Members of the public are asked to avoid the area until further notice.

Residents say that it appears the fire broke out at around 9 pm on Sunday (June 23) with one witness saying they could hear pops and explosions from the site of the blaze at the Linwood Industrial Estate at Burnbrae Road near Paisley.

Police have closed roads and cycle paths close to the blaze and have asked local residents to avoid the area until further notice, stay indoors and try to keep their windows and doors closed.

Police and firefighters rushed to the scene and remain on site, as they fight to contain the blaze.

It's been reported that around ten fire appliances arrived at the scene to tackle and contain the ongoing fire.

The site sits close to both Johnstone and Paisley and is also not far from Glasgow Airport, with one concerned resident stating: "I was scared with the amount of smoke coming off the building and the loud banging noises coming from it. I have a baby at home so it made me very concerned."

Police Scotland, The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS)and the Ambulance service have been contacted for comment.

Posting on Facebook, the SFRS said: 'Firefighters are currently in attendance at a large-scale fire involving a commercial building on Burnbrae Road, Paisley."

Police Scotland added: "Burnbrae Road in Linwood, Paisley is currently closed at the Linclive Interchange due to an ongoing fire within the Linwood Industrial Estate. The cycle path behind the industrial estate has also been closed.

"Emergency services are in attendance and members of the public are asked to avoid the area until further notice.

"As a precaution, local residents are asked to remain indoors and keep windows and doors closed for the time being."

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency tweeted: "SEPA is this evening supporting @fire_scot as part of a multi-agency response to a significant fire at Linwood Industrial Estate, Paisley."
