A major makeover is planned for Nuneaton's historic King Edward VI College - but it will need special permission first. The college, which has been rebranded as 'KE6', wants to make urgent repairs to part of one of its Grade II listed buildings but the changes require listed building consent.

Water damage has been causing major issues in 'block R', which is the building closest to the junction with Church Street. The college says that the whole roof needs to be replaced to stop prevent further water damage to the building.

It has secured funding through the government's School Rebuilding Programme to pay for the works, but the existing building was listed at Grade II in 1988. It is steeped in history as it was built in 1880 and designed by Clapton Rolfe in the domestic gothic revival style of William Butterfield with polychrome features.

It means specialist listed building planning permission is needed for the removal of roof tiles and felt battens. It will also cover planned new insulation to the roof as well as the installation of new tiles, felt, battens and insulation.

The go-ahead is also needed for the removal of what the college says will be a defunct spire, the refurbishment of the bell tower, new lead to the box gutter serving the turret roof section and the replacement of hanging tiles.

It is also seeking permission to treat high level timbers including exposed sections of rafters and barge boards and the repointing of brick work where required. Included within the planning application, which has been submitted to the borough council, include a heritage statement explaining the works.

The proposal is now being considered by planners at the borough council. A public consultation forms part of this and people can view the plans by visiting the council's website, searching in the planning applications section for reference 040083.

A target decision date for the proposal is June 11.
