'Huge' transfer interest in Leeds United-linked player, admits former Whites boss

The goalkeeping department is a strong area of Leeds United's squad. The Whites have three senior shot-stoppers on their books in the form of Illan Meslier, Karl Darlow and Kristoffer Klaesson.

Meslier has established himself as United's undisputed number one. He made his 150th league start for the club in Friday's damaging 4-0 loss at Queens Park Rangers.

But will United be in the market for a new goalkeeper when the transfer window reopens in the summer? The West Yorkshire club have been strongly linked with a move for Rotherham United star Viktor Johansson.

Widely regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers outside of the Premier League, Johansson is expected to leave the Millers following their relegation to League One. Stoke City have also been credited with an interest in the player.

The Swedish international has a release clause in his contract and will be available for a reduced transfer fee, thought to be in the region of £750,000. The 25-year-old was left out of the United team for their 2-0 loss at Bristol City last weekend.

Ex-United boss Steve Evans, who recently returned to Rotherham as boss, admits there has been "huge interest" in Johansson. “The chances are that, with the huge interest in him, Viktor will leave in the summer,” Evans told the Rotherham Advertiser. “It will probably be a life-changing move for the kid.”

Johansson was quizzed on his future after relegation was confirmed. He said: "I haven’t really thought about the summer. I'm still fully focused here. It hasn't been good enough from us and we want to at least find something good to end the season with. Your mind can't wander or you'll let yourself down and your team down. I don't want to be like that."
