David Wagner has been sacked by Norwich City just hours after their humiliating play-off defeat to Leeds United.

Wagner, who guided his Canaries side into the play-offs at the expense of Hull City having secured two controversial victories over the Tigers in the regular Championship campaign, saw his side thrashed 4-0 by Daniel Farke's Whites after a disastrous first half saw them 3-0 down.

Goals from Ilia Gruev, Joel Piroe, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville sealed a 4-0 aggregate win to send Farke, the former Canaries boss, to Wembley for the play-off final next weekend where they'll face either Southampton or West Brom, who meet at St Mary's on Friday night with the scores level from a dour first leg in the Black Country.

Arsenal assistant boss Carlos Cuesta has been linked with the Carrow Road job while former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has made it clear he doesn't want to be considered and Liam Rosenior could figure.

Wagner has taken charge of 75 games as Canaries head coach, just three games less than Rosenior, who lost his job at the MKM Stadium last Tuesday. In those 75 games, the German notched up 31 wins, 17 draws and 27 defeats having arrived in January 2023.

"Norwich City have parted company with head coach David Wagner," the club wrote in a statement on Friday morning. "Assistant head coach Christoph Bühler will also leave the club.

"Sporting director Ben Knapper said: “David has operated with class and dignity throughout his period as Norwich City head coach, but we now feel that the time is right for us to move in a different direction.

“We remain committed to progressing our football club, in both the short and long-term, working through a diligent and thorough strategy.

“The appointment of a new head coach is an important one. We will now work and continue our due diligence with the view of making an appointment in the near future.”

"All at Norwich City would like to place on record our thanks to both David and Christoph for their hard work and contributions to the club. We wish them well in their future careers. The club will now progress with its plans of appointing a new head coach."
