Hull FC have signed Cade Cust from Salford Red Devils for the 2025 season. The 25-year-old is out of contract at the Greater Manchester club come the end of the year, with Hull Live told the move for the half-back or hooker was completed late last week.

Cust will offer the Black and Whites some welcome depth in both positions, with the Australian previously working with new incoming head coach John Cartwright. The duo were together at NRL outfit Manly Sea Eagles while Cartwright was an assistant under Des Hasler and will now rekindle their working relationship at Hull, with Cust becoming the club’s seventh new signing for next season.

The former Wigan pivot signs as a backup half/hooker as desired by the club, with Hull Live outlaying the club’s quota plan last week. He adds both depth and competition to two of the four key spine roles and will fight for his place in a new-look side next year. He will take up one of Hull’s two remaining quota spots, with the Australian fitting the bill for what the club have been looking for.

Overseeing what has been a hefty recruitment drive since Richie Myler’s appointment as Director of Rugby, Hull have already bolstered both the half-back and hooker spots, signing Jordan Abdull to partner Jake Trueman. Elsewhere, Amir Bourouh will also join the club from Salford to work alongside young hooker Denive Balmforth, who signed a new one-year deal at the end of last month.

Cust, meanwhile, will compete among Hull’s spine options, offering some handy experience to Cartwright’s roster. Born in New South Wales in 1999, he first came onto the NRL scene with the Sea Eagles in 2019, before heading to the UK with Wigan Warriors in 2022.

He won the Challenge Cup with Wigan in his first season, making a total of 50 appearances, and was part of the squad that won the Super League title last season. He then moved to Salford Red Devils ahead of this year and has played 11 games for them to date.

Keen to work under Cartwright again, Hull Live understands that Cust has already told his Salford team-mates of his move to Hull, with the Black and Whites also signing John Asiata, Zak Hardaker, Oliver Holmes, and Ed Chamberlain for the 2025 season. They are still in the market for further additions, with an overseas full-back, as reported last week, their top target.

The full-back could yet be another marquee signing to go alongside Asiata and Trueman, with Hull confident they can land their desired target. They are also open to strengthening the outside backs and have not ruled out adding another forward to their roster.
