The Streetlife Museum, part of Hull Museums, has been named a finalist for the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award.

Since 2004, the Charity Kids in Museums has hosted an esteemed annual award that spotlights the most family-friendly heritage sites across the UK. This accolade stands out as the only museum award in the UK where families are involved in the judging process.

Families from all over the UK cast their votes for their preferred heritage site on the Kids in Museums website from late March to early June. Following this, a panel of experts in the museum field narrowed down the numerous entries to just 18 shortlisted heritage attractions.

In the Best Accessible Museum category, Streetlife is competing with two other museums for the top spot.

This particular category honours museums that have gone above and beyond to welcome families with children or young people who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The museums that have made it onto the shortlist will also receive constructive feedback on how they can enhance their offerings for family visitors.

Reacting to the news, Hull Museums Manager, Jane Avison, expressed her delight: "We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the Kids in Museums award. To have been nominated by visitors to the Streetlife Museum is a real credit to the team who deliver accessible family friendly events and activities throughout the year."

The Streetlife Museum, overlooking the museum gardens, is a bustling hub of activity. It houses collections related to transport and social history, and regularly hosts community exhibitions.

The museum is frequented by school groups, under fives, over 55s, and day centre visitors, with special events and activities organised during weekends and school holidays.

During the summer holidays, undercover family judges will visit the museum as part of the Family Friendly Museum Award 2024. These judges will evaluate the shortlisted museums based on the Kids in Museums Manifesto, which outlines what constitutes an excellent museum experience for all ages.

Their assessments will determine the winners for each award category, as well as the overall winner of the Family Friendly Museum Award 2024. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in October.
